Cothardie with Gates Of Hell

Gates of Hell

After years of having this Gates of Hell hanging nearly finished in my closet, it is finally finished.
The top of this gates is lined with white silk, the sides are edged with fur and there are decorative buttons on the front.

The pattern of the Gates of Hell, the red velvet overdress, is based upon the pattern of the cotehardie. It is basically the cotehardie with the sides cut off.

The name gates of Hell was given by the Church because this overdress accentuated the curves of the female body. A gates of hell can also be called a sideless surcote. A surcote is a general name for overdresses.

For more information on the cotehardie read the text of Cotehardie .
